NAMI AOP Monthly Educational Meeting

NAMI-AOP holds a monthly educational meeting on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM at the Pendleton United Methodist Church, 217 Broad Street in Pendleton, SC. This meeting is open to anyone who is interested in mental health issues. Meetings usually have a guest speaker. Past guest speakers have included a psychiatrist, a psychopharmacologist, legislators, state and local mental health leaders, etc. No meeting is held in July. Family Support Group

A monthly support group for family members of someone with a mental illness. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:15 pm at the Pendleton United Methodist Church, 217 Broad St., Pendleton. There is no meeting in July.

NAMI CONNECTIONS for Recovery Consumer Support Group

A weekly support group for people with a mental illness.

Family to Family Education Course

A series of twelve free weekly classes for family members of adult individuals with the following mental illnesses: Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder (Manic-Depression), Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Co-occuring brain disorders, and addictive disorders. Topics covered include the major mental illnesses, psychiatric medications, communication and problem solving skills, self-care, recovery, and advocacy. The course is taught by a team of trained NAMI family member volunteers who know what it's like to have a loved one struggling with one of the brain disorders. Class size is limited to 20 participants and pre-registration is required. Consult the Calendar section for the next series of classes.

NAMI Basics Course

A series of six weekly classes for parents and direct caregivers of children and adolescents with ADD/ADHD, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Schizophrenia, and more. Topics covered are the 'no fault' approach, the biology of mental illness, getting an accurate diagnosis, an overview of treatment options, the impact on family, communication, crisis management, the systems/agencies involved with your child, the importance of record keeping, and advocating and team building for you and your child. The course is taught by a team of trained NAMI family members and direct caregiver volunteers who know what it's like to have a child struggling with one of these brain disorders. Class size is limited to 20 participants and pre-registration is required. Consult the Calendar section for the next series of classes.

Peer to Peer Education Course

The NAMI Peer-to-Peer Education Course is a free nine-week experiential education course on the topic of recovery for any person with serious mental illness who is interested in establishing and maintaining wellness. Classes are two hours long. The course uses a combination of lecture, interactive exercises and structured group processes. Classes are designed to offer an opportunity for growth to any individual, 18 years of age or older, who experiences mental illness. Teams of three trained peer-teachers, who are themselves experienced at living well with mental illness teach the classes. Class size is limited to 20 participants and pre-registration is required. Provider Education Course

Provider Education is a series of ten weekly three-hour classes for mental health services providers that is taught by a five-member team composed of family members and consumers. The purpose of the course is to teach providers to form a collaboration between caring families, the client, and the treatment team. The goal is to assure that those stricken with mental illness have every possible support, and every possible advantage, in their struggle for recovery. Classes are arranged through NAMI SC.

Parents and Teachers as Allies

Parents and Teachers as Allies is a two hour in-service mental health education program for school professionals. The program focuses on helping school professionals and families within the school community understand the early warning signs of mental illness in children and adolescents and how best to intervene to link the youth with services. It also covers the lived experience of mental illness and how schools can best communicate with families about mental health related concerns.
